A Place of Comfort in Fairview

I did not come to Fairview, Quezon City, for a vacation. There were no carefully planned itineraries, no sightseeing agenda, and certainly no excitement about checking into a hotel. I was there because my dad was confined at Commonwealth Hospital and Medical Center, and during those difficult days, all I really needed was a place nearby where I could sleep, regroup, and prepare myself for whatever the next day might bring.
SotoGrande Neopolitan Hotel turned out to be exactly that place.

Its location could not have been more convenient for the reason I was there. Commonwealth Hospital and Medical Center was within walking distance, which made an enormous difference. When someone you love is in the hospital, distance suddenly matters in ways it normally does not. You do not want to calculate travel time, worry about traffic along Commonwealth Avenue, or wonder whether you can get back quickly if the hospital calls. Being able to simply walk between the hotel and the hospital gave me one less thing to think about during an already stressful time.
The stay itself was pleasant and comfortable, but what stood out most to me was the staff.
They were friendly, accommodating, and consistently gracious. There was an ease to the way they dealt with guests that felt very Filipino—not overly formal or rehearsed, but genuinely warm. It was the kind of hospitality that comes through in small interactions: a courteous greeting, a willingness to help, a smile at the end of a long day.
There is something distinctly comforting about Filipino hospitality, especially when you are going through something difficult. It is not necessarily about grand gestures. Sometimes it is simply the feeling that the people around you recognize that you are a person before you are a hotel guest. The staff at Sotogrande embodied that warmth.
Under different circumstances, perhaps I would have paid more attention to the usual things people notice when staying at a hotel. But on this trip, my priorities were very different. I needed proximity to my dad, a comfortable place to return to, and an environment that did not add more stress to an already exhausting situation.
SotoGrande Neopolitan Hotel provided all three.
Hotels sometimes become part of our memories for reasons that have very little to do with travel. They become the place where we waited for news, made phone calls to family, tried to get a few hours of sleep, or gathered ourselves before walking back into a hospital room.
For me, Sotogrande Hotel in Fairview will always be connected to that chapter.
I hope that someday I can return to Fairview under happier circumstances. But during one of the most difficult trips I have had to make, Sotogrande gave me something simple but important: a convenient, welcoming place to come back to at the end of the day.
And sometimes, that is exactly what a hotel needs to be.
